The footballer’s equipment: here is the jewelry banned on the field
When a sportsman takes the field, he must avoid any hazards that could compromise his sports performance. Dangers that can sometimes be hidden right in his equipment.
It is for this reason that all costume jewelry and jewelry accessories are prohibited on the field and must be removed before the competition – including commemorative rings. Therefore, necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings, leather or rubber strips are not allowed to be worn in competition.
The rule is peremptory and does not include “subterfuge,” no covering jewelry with tape or other materials. The entire equipment of the players, including the goalkeeper, must be checked before the match.
When a sportsman is wearing an unauthorized or considered dangerous piece of jewelry or costume jewelry accessory, the referee or match judge has the authority to order the player to remove the item in question or leave the field of play if he is unable to do so.
If, on the other hand, the referee orders the kicker to remove the jewelry, and after a few minutes he or she notices that he or she is still wearing it, in which case the kicker should be cautioned for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Jewelry banned on the soccer field, the case of Jules Kundè
In December 2022, France defender Jules Koundé was stopped by a match judge who asked him to remove the two gold chains he was wearing during the World Cup match against Poland, which was valid to enter the quarterfinals of the competition in Qatar.
Koundé persisted in his choice and kept the chains on until the 41st minute of the match. When the referee cautioned him for the second time, the champion would have none of it, until a team assistant called him to the sidelines and unhooked the clasps from behind his neck. Some thought Koundè was wearing the jewelry in protest, when in fact it was more of a superstition-related choice.
For the time being, France has not received any sanctions for this negligence, although the French national team coach has nonetheless admitted and acknowledged the wrongness of the gesture.
The wedding ring, is the only jewelry allowed in the competition. With the exception of only the wedding ring and glitter-as long as it is satin leather-all other jewelry must be removed before the match.
A soccer player’s mandatory equipment
Every soccer player taking the field must wear a jersey, shorts, socks and shoes. Players’ jerseys must all be numbered differently and each team must wear them in a different color so as to distinguish themselves. Goalkeepers must wear different jerseys from all other players and the Referee. Also, only goalkeepers may wear long pants (other team members are not allowed).
Equipment must not contain any slogan, writing or image of a political, religious or personal nature. Players must not display clothing worn under the equipment that contains slogans, writing or images of a political, religious, personal nature, or advertising other than the manufacturer’s logo.
For any infraction, the player and/or his team will be sanctioned directly by the competition organizer, national federation or FIFA.
